Let's play a game. I am going to propose different opening hands in a tournament game of vintage-format Magic. Try to answer:

a. On a scale of 1 to 10, how strong is the hand?
b. Would you Keep or Mulligan?
c. If you keep, what is the best sequence of plays? Why? (Note: insert your own tutor targets)

Assume your opponent is an expert player and this is game one. I will give additional context to each game before showing each hand. So here goes...

1) Stax Hand One

You are playing 5C Stax and believe your opponent is playing something blue, maybe Tez, and you are on the play.

Mishra's Workshop
Tangle Wire
Mox Jet
Smokestack
Strip Mine
Goblin Welder
Sphere of Resistance

2) Stax Hand Two

You are playing 5C Stax and your opponent is playing Fish. You are on the draw.

City of Brass
Crop Rotation
Black Lotus
Ancestral Recall
Tangle Wire
Smokestack
Triskelion

3) Stax Hand Three

You are playing 5C Stax and your opponent is also playing Stax, but more of an aggro deck like MUD. You are on the draw.

City of Brass
Goblin Welder
Bazaar of Baghdad
Vampiric Tutor
Tangle Wire
Tangle Wire
Trinisphere

4) Tezzeret Hand One

You are playing Tezzeret and your opponent is also playing Tezzeret. You are on the play.

Force of Will
Mana Drain
Mox Sapphire
Island
Polluted Delta
Brainstorm
Sol Ring

5) Tezzeret Hand Two

You are playing Tezzeret and your opponent is playing some sort of unknown Stax deck. You are on the draw.

Island
Polluted Delta
Underground Sea
Mox Emerald
Mana Crypt
Mana Drain
Gifts Ungiven

6) Tezzeret Hand Three

You are playing Tezzeret and your opponent is playing Fish. You are on the play.

Time Vault
Voltaic Key
Island
Black Lotus
Demonic Tutor
Vampiric Tutor
Yawgmoth's Will

7) Fish Hand One

You are playing Fish and your opponent is playing something Blue, either Tez or Oath. You are on the play.

Island
Mox Pearl
Mox Emerald
Null Rod
Qasali Pridemage
Daze
Stifle

8) Fish Hand Two

You are playing Fish and your opponent is playing 5C Stax. You are on the draw.

Force of Will
Force of Will
Force of Will
Daze
Island
Mox Emerald
Tarmogoyf

9) Fish Hand Three

You are playing Fish and your opponent is playing Fish. You are on the play.

Black Lotus
Ancestral Recall
Swords to Plowshares
Flooded Strand
Island
Savannah
Wasteland

I will post my thoughts after a few other people answer. Have fun!

First one sux. No red for welder, lotsa lands. Strip mine and tanglewire are good, but its not nearly enough long term control. Mulligan

second one is good. city of brass into anscestrall (drawing three moxes of course) then turn one trike

Play Welder ASAP, use bazaar=win

as for tezzeret what do i know? I would be so excited to see a force of will in my hand i doubt i would ever throw it away. Would need significant desensitising to using counterspells

Really? How about 1st turn Strip Mine, Mox Jet, Sphere of Resistance? It slows down their Moxen and makes them play a Fetch Land or lose their land drop next turn. If they Force of Will the Sphere of Resistence, you play Workshop and Tangle Wire next turn and really mess them up. I would rate this hand at least an 8 out of 10 for having multiple threats and a good amount of mana.

Mishra's Workshop
Tangle Wire
Mox Jet
Smokestack
Strip Mine
Goblin Welder
Sphere of Resistance

a. 8 out of 10
b. Keep
c. Strip Mine, Mox Jet, Sphere of Resistance (see above for additional thoughts)

2) Stax Hand Two

You are playing 5C Stax and your opponent is playing Fish. You are on the draw.

City of Brass
Crop Rotation
Black Lotus
Ancestral Recall
Tangle Wire
Smokestack
Triskelion

a. 6 out of 10
b. Keep
c. City of Brass, Crop Rotation for Mishra's Workshop (see if they have a counterspell), Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall. If all resolved and a Mox is drawn, play Triskelion. If not, play Tangle Wire if possible.

The reason this hand is sort of weak is that if they counter the Ancestral Recall, you are very vulnerable to a Wasteland.

City of Brass
Goblin Welder
Bazaar of Baghdad
Vampiric Tutor
Tangle Wire
Tangle Wire
Trinisphere

a. 5 out of 10
b. Keep
c. If they did not play a Sphere of Resistance, play City of Brass, Goblin Welder. If they played a Sphere of Resistance (or Lodestone Golem), Bazaar of Baghdad and dig like hell for mana!

This hand absolutely depends on Bazaar of Baghdad to be good. If it does not dig good cards up or if it gets hit with a Wasteland too soon, this hand is very weak.
